Barrie Atkin’s January 2025 Newsletter #1

Happy New Year! I wish you a healthy, happy, safe, and productive 2025.

Did you have a special accomplishment in 2024 that you haven’t already shared with me? Do you have a specific goal for 2025? I would enjoy hearing from you.

One of my goals for 2024 was to (finally) publish “HATE FUNDRAISING? How to Become Comfortable Asking for Money” – which I did in mid-November. If you haven’t already purchased it, you can buy it here:

HATE FUNDRAISING? How to Become Comfortable Asking for Money

Now, it’s time to celebrate! and YOU are invited to the official launch party – even if you haven’t read HATE FUNDRAISING?

The launch party will take place virtually on Thursday, January 16th, from 12 noon to 1:15 pm ET (9 am to 10:15 am PT).

Sign up to receive the Zoom link for the January 16th event:

We will celebrate the success of HATE FUNDRAISING? to date, share some fundraising anecdotes and tips, answer questions, and give away prizes.

There will be some special guests and other surprises. The party will be hosted by Robbie Samuels, the maestro behind my book launch.

This is a PUBLIC event. You are encouraged to share this email to invite a friend or two to join you. (Know anyone involved with a nonprofit, perhaps as a volunteer on a nonprofit Board?)

With the support of my amazing book launch team, HATE FUNDRAISING? has received 30 amazing reviews on Amazon so far. THANK YOU!

Sample excerpts from reader reviews:

  • What a great book! Barrie Atkin expertly identified the key internal or personal hurdles to fundraising without judgment. I find her suggestions for overcoming those hurdles insightful and helpful.
  • Barrie had me at the title! I enjoyed reading this book because I could relate to it so easily. Having served on several boards and committees where fundraising is a requirement, her writing and best practices helped me assess my fundraising skills and approach them with confidence.

P.S. You don’t have to have read “HATE FUNDRAISING? How to Become Comfortable Asking for Money” to attend. If you’d like to purchase the eBook (99 cents) or paperback you’ll find it on Amazon:

HATE FUNDRAISING? How to Become Comfortable Asking for Money

More excerpts from reader reviews on Amazon:

  • HATE FUNDRAISING? doesn’t do the fundraising for you, but it does the next best thing.
  • I really liked Atkin’s guidance on building one-on-one connections, handling rejection gracefully, and the importance of personal investment in your cause. The book offers tools that are immediately actionable.
  • The book serves as a guide for those who feel averse to fundraising by breaking down their fears – into manageable categories, offering targeted strategies to overcome these challenges, and encouraging a more confident approach to asking for donations.
  • This book is an easy read and delivers on its promise—becoming comfortable asking for money.
  • An unexpected treasure.

Clients say…

I hired Barrie to help write a business plan to fund a new initiative within a fairly large company. This initiative had to compete with other worthy ones for limited available funding. Barrie did the market research, competitive intelligence, and market valuation pieces, which were key to our successful pitch for funding. This was a one-year project, and during its course I came to enjoy working with Barrie, looking forward to her visits and our trips together, and I got more than I expected with each deliverable.

Scott Overholt
Account Director @ Harte-Hanks Direct

Barrie’s knowledge of direct marketing and circulation was invaluable. She analyzed our situation and put plans and programs into place to fix the problems. And when we had some unexpected staff turnover, she put together a team of experienced professionals to get us back on track. Barrie served as Interim Circulation Director, overseeing budgets, audits, creative programs, direct mail and testing. She also helped us hire an outstanding permanent Circulation Director.

Dean Kessel
Vice President & General Manager @ BASS

When Barrie researched new markets for Rodale, I could depend upon her recommendations. She helped us understand new opportunities, evaluated potential competitive threats, and provided a thorough analysis of risks and rewards. We received real value for her work — detailed deliverables and actionable recommendations that really helped our bottom line.

Robert J. Teufel
Former President @ Rodale

Barrie Atkin is a tremendously energetic and committed marketing, strategy and development professional. She worked tirelessly with our staff and board to establish a framework and plan for our development goals, and then provided development, marketing, training and planning services to help implement our goals. Barrie gave 110% and together we achieved great success.

Lisa Krinsky
Director @ LGBT Aging Project

I chose Barrie because of the diverse expertise she demonstrated previously in business planning, her knowledge of health publishing and the healthcare field, her work ethic, and her experience working with nonprofits. In addition to her professional skills, Barrie is a pleasure to work with, and works well with the rest of our staff as part of our team.

Tom Easley
Executive Director Publishing @ New England Journal of Medicine

I highly recommend working with Barrie — whether or not you’re still planning your first appeal letter; or you’ve already run a capital campaign to fund your Senior Center. Barrie has a strong commitment to elders and working with nonprofits, combined with an expertise in fundraising and marketing. I have worked with Barrie for over six years. I find her to be incredibly gifted in making fundraising profitable, manageable and fun.

Ruthann Dobek
Director @ Brookline Senior Center & Council on Aging
