Barrie Atkin’s March 2024 Newsletter

Hope your 2024 has been going well. Welcome to March:

  • ALERT: PUFFIN TOUR SIGN-UP MARCH 5! (See below)
  • International Women’s Day: March 8.
“No country can ever flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.” – Michelle Obama
  • Daylight Savings Time starts Sunday morning March 10 at 2 am. Move your clocks an hour ahead.
  • The first day of spring (the spring equinox) in the Northern hemisphere will be on March 19 at 11:06 P.M. EDT. (More about the equinox.)

PUFFIN TOUR SIGN-UP Tuesday, March 5 at 9 am.

You may recall from my November 2023 newsletter that I wrote about my amazing trip to Machias Seal Island in Maine to see puffins up close. Many of you wrote that you were interested in learning about a future opportunity to see the puffins with Bold Coast Charter, the only U.S. company licensed to take visitors onto the island.

This year’s sign-up is on TUESDAY March 5 at 9 am for trips in June and July. Be ready. Last year bookings were filled in 15 minutes!

If you don’t get in, check back regularly because there will be some cancellations, especially after the trips start.

HATE FUNDRAISING?

I’m excited to announce that my book “HATE FUNDRAISING? How to Become Comfortable Asking for Money” will be published this spring.

This book is for you if:

  • Like most people, you hate fundraising.
  • The thought of asking for money makes you nauseous!
  • You would prefer to go to the dentist than be involved in fundraising!

Your Opportunity:

  • Sign up to be part of my book launch team! You’ll get some free gifts, a PDF of the book, and advance notice to buy the book at an introductory price.
  • Write to me at Barrie@AtkinAssociates.com and put “Hate Fundraising” in the subject line.

HATE FUNDRAISING?

TAYLOR SWIFT BOWL!

Did you watch the Super Bowl last month — and the commercials? The game lived up to its hype. Thanks in part to Taylor Swift, the Super Bowl set new viewing records. It also featured unique commercials. In addition to all those sucker-a-minute gambling ads, did you see the ads for DOVE? For a menopausal hot-flash medication? For cosmetics? The “SwiftBowl” attracted more women viewers than ever — and new categories of advertisers.

Here’s some interesting commentary in Forbes from Bridget Brennan who writes about women consumers.

Happy March!

Your Fan,

Clients say…

I hired Barrie to help write a business plan to fund a new initiative within a fairly large company. This initiative had to compete with other worthy ones for limited available funding. Barrie did the market research, competitive intelligence, and market valuation pieces, which were key to our successful pitch for funding. This was a one-year project, and during its course I came to enjoy working with Barrie, looking forward to her visits and our trips together, and I got more than I expected with each deliverable.

Scott Overholt
Account Director @ Harte-Hanks Direct

Barrie’s knowledge of direct marketing and circulation was invaluable. She analyzed our situation and put plans and programs into place to fix the problems. And when we had some unexpected staff turnover, she put together a team of experienced professionals to get us back on track. Barrie served as Interim Circulation Director, overseeing budgets, audits, creative programs, direct mail and testing. She also helped us hire an outstanding permanent Circulation Director.

Dean Kessel
Vice President & General Manager @ BASS

When Barrie researched new markets for Rodale, I could depend upon her recommendations. She helped us understand new opportunities, evaluated potential competitive threats, and provided a thorough analysis of risks and rewards. We received real value for her work — detailed deliverables and actionable recommendations that really helped our bottom line.

Robert J. Teufel
Former President @ Rodale

Barrie Atkin is a tremendously energetic and committed marketing, strategy and development professional. She worked tirelessly with our staff and board to establish a framework and plan for our development goals, and then provided development, marketing, training and planning services to help implement our goals. Barrie gave 110% and together we achieved great success.

Lisa Krinsky
Director @ LGBT Aging Project

I chose Barrie because of the diverse expertise she demonstrated previously in business planning, her knowledge of health publishing and the healthcare field, her work ethic, and her experience working with nonprofits. In addition to her professional skills, Barrie is a pleasure to work with, and works well with the rest of our staff as part of our team.

Tom Easley
Executive Director Publishing @ New England Journal of Medicine

I highly recommend working with Barrie — whether or not you’re still planning your first appeal letter; or you’ve already run a capital campaign to fund your Senior Center. Barrie has a strong commitment to elders and working with nonprofits, combined with an expertise in fundraising and marketing. I have worked with Barrie for over six years. I find her to be incredibly gifted in making fundraising profitable, manageable and fun.

Ruthann Dobek
Director @ Brookline Senior Center & Council on Aging
