It’s been quite a while since I’ve written. Hope you have had a healthy and safe summer and fall.

Emily Franklin, author of The Lioness of Boston, a novel about museum founder Isabella Stewart Gardner, recently said, “Writing in any genre strengthens writing in every genre.”

Rather than talk about my writing, I’d like to share some thoughts on such a scary and dangerous time:

  • Deadly rampage in Lewiston Maine.
  • Hamas terrorists gleefully massacring civilians in Israel, leading to a war.
  • Reputable media (Associated Press, NY Times, the Boston Globe, and others) accepting and repeating Hamas’ blatantly false claims without verification. (Want accurate reporting? Check out honestreporting.com.)
  • Election denier now second in line for President.
  • Anti-Semitism on the rise.
  • The Russian-Ukraine war slogs on.
  • World tensions increase.

And yet, I have so much to be grateful for – and would like to share a few special experiences with you:

  • Machias Seal Island, Maine – One of the only places in the northeast where it’s possible to see puffins up close (from a bird blind). Only 15 people allowed per day from the U.S. during the puffin breeding season from mid-June to early August.Puffin watchingWant to sign up for this extraordinary adventure to see these comical and amazing birds? Contact me before January.
  • If you’re in Philadelphia, once you’ve had your fill – or you’re full of Philly cheesesteaks – be sure to book a tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary. It’s an historic and huge prison that was considered a leader in prison reform in the 1800s; finally closed in 1971. The night tour is both creepy and awesome.
  • 80 degrees for most of October – OK, I’m cheating here. I spent half of October in Croatia and Slovenia where it was 80 degrees every day. Highly recommend for the geography, history, the gelato, delightful swimming in the Adriatic Sea, and much more. Glad to offer travel tips.
  • And yes, it was also 80 degrees on Saturday October 28th in Boston. So, I swam in the Atlantic Ocean near my home.
  • On the family front, I have a new great-niece!

Hoping you also have much to be grateful for as well as we approach this holiday season. Let’s stay in touch.

Your Fan,

P.S. About that 10,000-word book… stay tuned. It will be ready soon.

I hired Barrie to help write a business plan to fund a new initiative within a fairly large company. This initiative had to compete with other worthy ones for limited available funding. Barrie did the market research, competitive intelligence, and market valuation pieces, which were key to our successful pitch for funding. This was a one-year project, and during its course I came to enjoy working with Barrie, looking forward to her visits and our trips together, and I got more than I expected with each deliverable.

Scott Overholt
Account Director @ Harte-Hanks Direct

Barrie’s knowledge of direct marketing and circulation was invaluable. She analyzed our situation and put plans and programs into place to fix the problems. And when we had some unexpected staff turnover, she put together a team of experienced professionals to get us back on track. Barrie served as Interim Circulation Director, overseeing budgets, audits, creative programs, direct mail and testing. She also helped us hire an outstanding permanent Circulation Director.

Dean Kessel
Vice President & General Manager @ BASS

When Barrie researched new markets for Rodale, I could depend upon her recommendations. She helped us understand new opportunities, evaluated potential competitive threats, and provided a thorough analysis of risks and rewards. We received real value for her work — detailed deliverables and actionable recommendations that really helped our bottom line.

Robert J. Teufel
Former President @ Rodale

Barrie Atkin is a tremendously energetic and committed marketing, strategy and development professional. She worked tirelessly with our staff and board to establish a framework and plan for our development goals, and then provided development, marketing, training and planning services to help implement our goals. Barrie gave 110% and together we achieved great success.

Lisa Krinsky
Director @ LGBT Aging Project

I chose Barrie because of the diverse expertise she demonstrated previously in business planning, her knowledge of health publishing and the healthcare field, her work ethic, and her experience working with nonprofits. In addition to her professional skills, Barrie is a pleasure to work with, and works well with the rest of our staff as part of our team.

Tom Easley
Executive Director Publishing @ New England Journal of Medicine

I highly recommend working with Barrie — whether or not you’re still planning your first appeal letter; or you’ve already run a capital campaign to fund your Senior Center. Barrie has a strong commitment to elders and working with nonprofits, combined with an expertise in fundraising and marketing. I have worked with Barrie for over six years. I find her to be incredibly gifted in making fundraising profitable, manageable and fun.

Ruthann Dobek
Director @ Brookline Senior Center & Council on Aging
